Welcome, one and all, to an event two years in the making! In September 2003, longtime guest writer Jade asked me if she could try doing some Firefly fivers. I gave her permission, and not only did she do some, but she got so into it I decided she should go for the whole subsite. Since then, she's been working steadily, and a while ago she finished all of her episodes. ("Her" episodes are everything but the two series pilots, which are my territory, and the work of a certain other guest writer who got in just in time.) We decided to synchronize with the opening of Serenity, and here we are. Behold our newest subsite: Five-Minute Firefly by Jade.

Over the next few days, we'll be publishing fivers for every single episode of the series, including the ones that never aired. And aside from a few cameo appearances, it's all Jade. To start things off, here are the first two Firefly fivers (Firevers?) she wrote: "Safe" and "Ariel." Enjoy!

(Note: The graphics, like all others on recent subsites, are temporary.)

Our Five-Minute Firefly launch continues today with two more of Jade's fivers: "Bushwhacked" and "Our Mrs. Reynolds." (Noticed the new front-page gag for this event yet?)

Welcome to Day 3 of our Five-Minute Firefly launch! First up is Jade yet again (jaded yet?) with "Jaynestown," one of my favourites for a reason you'll quickly discover. Today we also have the first guest fiver of this event: "Heart of Gold," by the just-in-time guest writer alluded to in a previous newspost, PointyHairedJedi.

(Sorry for the unscheduled absence yesterday -- somebody told me to burn the land and boil the sea. You would not believe how long that takes.)

Welcome to Day 4, where once again we are thoroughly J-J-Jaded. (She's got her mama's style but she's yesterday's child to me...) Today's fivers are "Out of Gas" and "Shindig."

(Note 1: I forgot to mention yesterday that Jade has dedicated her "Jaynestown" fiver to the memory of Kerry "Lux Lucre" Pearson, a Firefly filker of note. This will be reflected on the fiver page when I implement the next version of the PHP code.)

(Note 2: Be sure to check out the Season 1 page before the end of this event. At that point I'll have to come up with real blurbs.)

Welcome to Day 5 and another volley from Jade, the Two-Fiver Kid! Today she's got "War Stories" (probably my favourite episode) and "Trash" (for which I decided to make a special exception and let Jade keep her spelling of "naked," even though it BURNS MY EYES).

Whew! After days of searching in vain, I've finally found Jade's last two fivers. (She's got very limited net access right now and couldn't re-send them.) Stay tuned for the grand finale of our Five-Minute Firefly launch.

Five-Minute Firefly lives! Welcome to the conclusion of our subsite launch, featuring the remaining four(ish) episodes of Firefly.

  • First up, my contribution: the original two-hour pilot, "Serenity" (not to be confused with the movie or comic series of the same name). For those who don't know the story behind this, Joss's original pilot -- much like "The Cage" -- was rejected as not exciting enough. The network asked for a second pilot, so Joss provided....
  • ..."The Train Job," the first episode that actually aired. This fiver comes from the one "cameo" I didn't telegraph earlier: Derek Dean. He's a big Firefly fan and I had two pilots, so I offered him this one. I think you'll agree he did a bangup job. And finally....
  • ...Jade delivers the last two fivers of this event, "Objects in Space" (the last episode in Joss's intended order) and "The Message" (one of the three that never aired, along with "Trash" and "Heart of Gold").
That's not all -- I've finally provided an FAQ for the subsite and proper blurbs for the episodes. (There'll be a Jade FAQ too.)

Now, there's one thing I'm sure everybody's wondering at this point: what about the movie? Rest assured that it will be covered at 5MFY, whether by Jade, me, or someone else. (I'd have a more definite answer, but Jade is still low on net access, so I haven't had the chance to talk to her about it.) We're not taking submissions for the movie, so please don't send any. We do, however, take submissions of money... or beer.

Thanks for reading, and keep watching the skies! ('Cause you never know when someone'll try to take 'em from you.)

Sorry for the dropoff in updates -- last week I had to proctor and mark the undergrad midterms, and this week I have two of my own to write. Last one's today, though. And there's good news too: my copy of Mega Man Zero 4 just arrived! Wait, that's the good news for me. The good news for you is that there's yet another subsite event almost ready to go. This one's not a launch, but a relaunch and refurbishing of an existing subsite. Feel free to speculate on which one if you're into that sort of thing.

That should start tomorrow. Meanwhile, Derek has unveiled an exciting new utility he's been working on, designed to automate parts of the guest fiver process. It currently covers Derek's two subsites and 5MB5. Read his explanatory thread for the scoop.

Welcome to the relaunch of Five-Minute Smallville! With Season 5 upon us and Smallville one of the few shows we cover that are still running, it was high time to do 5MSV up proper. The subsite is now fully equipped with PHP, blurbs, and colour code. Over the next few days we'll be putting these features to use with a batch of new fivers, starting with these two:

  • "Arrival," the premiere of Season 5; and
  • "Ageless," third last episode of Season 4, and one of the absolute worst episodes of anything I saw last season. So clichéd. Soooooo clichéd. But I digress.
Both of these are by Derek, subsite head of 5MSV. Look for lots more from him in the remainder of this event, not to mention an FAQ and maybe a guest appearance or two. Up, up and away!

Welcome to Day 2 of the Five-Minute Smallville launch. Today it's all Derek's show, with the following three fivers:

  • "Mortal," the second episode of Season 5;
  • "Krypto," the S4 episode that sort-of not-quite brought in one of my all-time favourite Superman "characters"; and
  • "Lucy," another one for the geeks in the audience, this time featuring Lois's rarely-seen sister.
We're still only half done, so be here tomorrow for Day 3!

Slight change of plans: since I've fallen behind with the Smallville event, there will be a brief intermission for the Hallowe'en event, and then we'll get back to Smallville.
