Welcome to Hallowe'en '05: Hallowe'en '03 II: Day 2! Here's the stuff....
[*]In America, first you get The Ring, then you get The Ring 2, but in between you get Rings. This was a short film that was first issued with the special-edition DVD of The Ring, shortly before the sequel came out. (You can now get it with the Ring 2 DVD as well.) It's based on the brilliant premise of Samara's cursed video starting an underground teen craze, something between a cult and a huge game of Chicken. For a 15-minute feature, it's very original and very scary -- and I felt it was worthy of its own fiver.[*]Today we also have Derek's first standalone movie fiver: Dark City. I haven't seen the movie, but I'm told it's amazing, and Derek suggested that it would fit with this event. Enjoy.[/list]Don't go away -- this event ain't over yet. Oh, and happy Guy Fawkes' Day.

Seven Days was a good show!

Oh, and a Sunglasses at Night ref. Good on you. There's more music jokes I can't quite decypher yet; anyone?

Nice job on Dark City...fond memories galore.

Heh.

Good ones, both (and interesting too that both fivers featured Daylight Savings gags.)

For the record, there are six more song references, counting The 12 Days of Christmas. The last one's pretty obscure -- Derek has a good shot at it, though, as I've seen him reference the song in question before.

Oh, is this a challenge now? Uh... uh.... uh.....

Honestly, I have no clue which one you think I'll know. Sadly, I'm sure I did reference it at some point, but oh well. Of course your Avril reference reminded me of ENT S3 fivers.

Here are the songs I'm seeing:

Quote:
Jake: Oo, a puddle on the wall. Splish, splash. Splish, spla--
Splish splash! I was takin' a bath....

Quote:
The spooky hair chick who
SPOOKY! SPOOKY!

Of course, those are only after trying to look for song lyrics. And that second one is pretty out there since you didn't even say "spooky little girl". Oh well.

(re-read) No, wait! I think I know which one you think I know!

Yep, that's the one. I knew someone who would name his kids Nathaniel and Superfly would get it. (For the curious, the lyrics -- which are, however, no substitute for hearing Al sing it.)

On the other hand, the first two bits you quoted weren't references. The Avril scene has three quotes from her songs, so that just leaves one reference unaccounted for. It's late in the fiver and will be obvious to anyone who knows the (very 80s) song.

I also quoted "Albuquerque" in Five-Minute "Fair Trade".

Not finding the other one. My 80s music is kinda hit or miss.

80s music itself was kinda hit or miss. With a lot of miss.

You can say that about any era though. Plus, the 80s gave us Duran Duran, and who are we mere mortals to question such greatness as that?

You know, I've never even heard of Dark City. Heck, first I thought you meant Darkman even, so that shows how little I know of it. What is it about, exactly?

Dark City rocks. It most often is compared to the movie Metropolis (which I unfortunately haven't seen).

Brief summary: A guy wakes up in a hotel room with no memories. Plagued by confused, half-remembered memories of a bright sunny childhood, he struggles through a (shocker) dark city trying to find out who he is and what's going on. Throughout the entire movie, the city is always dark; no sun, no moon, just dim streetlights. He eventually discovers that the city is a massive experiment run by aliens who constantly rearrange the structure of the city and the lives of the people in it. His main interactions throughout the movie are with his wife, a police inspector who believes him to be guilty of the murder of a number of prostitutes, and a defecting collaborator working with the aliens to alter people's minds.

There's more to the movie than that though, and I highly recommend it for anyone interested in just a good scifi film. It's not really horror, so it doesn't quite fit the Halloween theme exactly, but it's very dark.

And on a side note, I think this fiver is my 94th-ish fiver or so, which is 47x2, so I'm glad to do one of my favorite movies in honor of the occasion (though I didn't realize it at the time).

Safe to assume no takers at this point, so... the final music reference in that fiver is to the classic one-hit wonder "Jenny (867-5309)" by Tommy Tutone. For more on that song's dubious impact, see Snopes.

Heh, I didn't really make a specific connection with that song -- the "for a good time, call..." bit was quite old, even at that time -- but Tommy Tutone did have one other song, "Cheap Date", which garnered a fair amount of airplay, though certainly not on the scale of "Jenny". I doubt most of you are even old enough to remember it, though.

Yeah. Some system glitch causes posts to appear under "Guest", even though the user is logged in -- thought I'd figured out how to work around it, but it appears I didn't do something right. Hm.
