You could expand that into some sort of universal truth. "They're comic books; they don't have to make sense."

Yes, but Nextwave is designed to make no sense, rather than the naive stupidity of, say, the Legion of Superheroes.

It's like saying "Well, a Ferrari is just a car". No, it's not. Nextwave is the king of nonsense in comics.
