A long, in-depth article about different ways of programming the camera in sidescrollers. There are a lot of illustrative GIFs.

Today's latest silly online game straight from the Straight Dope forum:
How many taps (i.e. hitting the same button over and over) can you do in a minute? I start out over 400, but around 380 seems to be my average, at least for the first minute. The forumgoers have multiple strategies for upping the numbers, including multiple fingers on multiple keys, which I think is a different category entirely. Random flailing over the entire keyboard gets me up to about 1400, but gets exhausting really fast. Anyway, if you want to waste a minute on a meaningless task and are at an actual keyboard (and aren't somewhere where the noise would bother someone), give it a try.

So I'm working my way through a YouTube playlist of anime songs remixed to sound like they're being generated by music boxes...
The Mach Go Go Go (AKA Speed Racer) Theme Wasn't expecting that.

Apparently I haven't shilled pocket83 yet. He does the most remarkable things with everyday items. Today he made bookends from hand-shaped clumps of BBs. No, really.
Here are some highlights from his channel: A yard feeder that lets hummingbirds eat, but prevents ants from stealing their food. Custom-made Lincoln logs for more building options. How to sink a nail in one hit. Attempting to turn a potter's wheel into a pumpkin lathe.

Every so often I try to post a Trek-related Christmas music video...
The Twelve Days of Star Trek And as a bonus... A Trek-themed yard lighting display complete with authentic sounds! PNQ: Is that stuff at around the two minute mark from the Kelvinverse movies or something? As an afterward, say what you will about STTMP, you can't deny that the full Goldsmith main theme isn't a thing of beauty.

Fanart by Amy Mebberson
Most of her stuff is Disney related (and more specifically, the Disney Princesses), but there are other franchises represented. Here are a few highlights: Elsa, Belle, and Snow White can't handle summers, so they'll stay in while Jasmine and Tiana stay out. What kind of doughnut would each princess ask for on National Doughnut Day? The princesses play in the giant Money Bin attraction. Belle's dress needs something else... Aurora tries using a "dinglehopper" to curl her hair. Merida and Mulan go shoe shopping...for their horses. Note the name on the crates... Back to the Future...kiddie edition! A black cat/Friday the 13th prank backfires...and is that Figaro? The princesses cosplay as Marvel superheroines Jesse the Yodeling Cowgirl rides Applejack Kristoff welcomes Anna home, he's a keeper The princesses dress as their animal friends, and that means Elsa has to dress as Olaf Tiana doesn't like Pumpkin Spice any more than I do Cinderella goes through glass slippers at an impressive rate... Anna and Rapunzel look similar, tying into that whole linked Disney universe theory. It's a mess, but you can read about it here... Tiana is chagrined by the great Sleeping Beauty pink vs. blue debate Basic Kiki's Delivery Service fanart. Is that Kiki supposed to be more in the style of another animated character? Mickey and Minnie do their own version of Paperman DC superheroine group shot. It's interesting how some of these are in the style of the DC Nation shorts, but others edge a bit more toward manga or the Timmiverse style. Gaston's fan club (aka the Bimbettes) as Huey, Dewey, and Louie. Incidentally, today I learned that the red one is Claudette, the yellow one is Laurette, and the green one is Paulette. Tinkerbell as Wonder Woman. I love how she kept the boot pom-poms. A collage of Disney redheads. Pop quiz: Can you tell me the name of that cowgirl next to Jesse without looking it up? Disney Princess Singalong! Belle cosplaying as Han Solo. I didn't know that his blaster was called a DL-44. Disney Afternoon group shot. I admit that I don't like the limited number of colors, and that row of Beagle Boys at the top should be the different ones, not just a bunch of clones of a generic Beagle Boy. The Sailor Moon cast drawn as though they were created in more recent time. It's good art, but I'm reminded of that much-hyped Archie redesign and relaunch of a few years ago... Belle and Beast as the main characters of Paperman. Belle enrolls at Hogwarts. I question her placement in Ravenclaw, but that's a discussion for another day... The princesses cosplay as the different incarcations of The Doctor, and various Pixar characters cosplay as Star Wars characters Steampunk Aurora and Belle Belle and Beast enroll at Howarts. This time they're in Gryffindor. Princess Kida's application to join the Pocket Princesses. With the benefit of hindsight I'm willing to accept that Atlantis the Lost Empire wasn't as good as I remember. That doesn't mean that the characters deserve to be forgotten, however. The princesses cosplay as Batman villainesses The princesses cosplay as Marvel superheroines Rapunzel as Wonder Woman. Pascal as Steve Trevor is more of a mystery... Rapunzel as X-23. This one is just weird...what connection is there? With her haircut and look I would expect her to be the Wasp or Black Widow before X-23. Belle reads the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The connection eludes me, is it just because it's a geeky book? Belle in "1630" style. She looks great and I guess she is supposed to be a Regency-era English heroine, but she still looks more like a 19th-century Southern belle if you ask me. The princesses in '40s USO costumes. I'll just throw up a link to "Star Spangled Man" again... Tinker Bell as Eliza Doolittle. Beaker from the Muppets as a member of SG-1. Who gave him a gun?

Apparently I haven't shilled yoyomax12 yet. Tammy (Max is her son) cooks creative and attractive food that I would never have the patience (or the food budget!) for. But just like many other "how to" channels, I like to watch other people be creative.
Highlights: "Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup"-really pound cake, frosting, and pudding! "T-Bone Steak"-really a brownie! Pizza Cake-it's a layer cake made out of pizza! Raisin Bread that looks like watermelon-it's funny how many people ask if there's a non-raisin option, forgetting that chocolate chips will melt and not look like watermelon seeds. Minecraft cake-cake, Jello, and rice crispy bars! Rainbow unicorn poop cookies-there's a fad I'm glad seems to have faded away, the rainbow unicorn poop thing. Ro of Nerdy Nummies made these afterward, but Tammy made them first! Kit Kat Ice Cream Cake-I'm always reminded of my mom when watching this video, she loved Kit Kats... Melted Snowman Cookies Marshmallow Cereal Christmas Wreaths-This one reminds me of my mom, she would make treats out of chocolate and chow mein noodles (what some call "chocolate easter nests", only without the bells and whistles)

Today Numberphile tackles the Wolf/Goat/Cabbage River Crossing Problem.
This is one of the earliest logic problems that I encountered as a child, thanks to this book (oh, did I learn a lot from the Childcraft Library!), just look! For some reason Wikipedia calls this the Fox/Goose/Bag of Beans Puzzle. I've never heard it called that...

The borders between the nations of the world, along with when each segment was finalized.
You'd be surprised at how "new" some borders are and how "old" some others are, especially when there's a new one next to an old one. There are also notes for several critical segments. Incidentally, the oldest continuous border segment between current nations is the 120 km perimeter of Andorra between France and Spain, 1278. Wow.

Star Trek Medley on an organ.
It starts out fine, but after about fifty seconds it starts to sound like a Star Trek-themed carousel. Absolutely hilarious. And then at eight minutes we get the radio melodrama version of the theme. You can just imagine the Guardian of Forever shilling for soap powder.

3Blue1Brown stumps some math YouTubers with a topological problem.
I've mentioned that I'm a topological geek before, and I'm a fan of a lot of the YouTubers shown, and it's fun to see them work through a problem, especially the eureka moment when they figure out why they were given the problem in terms of a coffee mug and not just a piece of paper.

The Pi Search Page
Put a string of numbers in the box and the page will tell you where they first occur in the full value of pi, i.e. which decimal place they start at. For example, 42 starts at position 92, 47 starts at position 119, and 1701 starts at position 20,239. And that's your meaningless bit of trivia for today.

Just in case you happen to be living in 1995 and want to make your PC look like a few cheap slabs of plastic with Cochrane deltas and LCARS design elements on them.
