That would mean if the U.S. was (in theory) equivalent to a country in europe, but the U.K. only equivalent to one of our states, that would clearly make the U.S. superior!

And it's rubbish. Since Britain is the place you get your language and most of your (so-called) culture, it couldn't be a state! Anyhoo - WE don't have to pretend we aren't building an empire - we've had one for ages, and WE'RE NOT GIVING IT UP!
