Mostly true now, but it used to be that Hollywood, the San Fernando Valley (dude), the Inland Empire and ... yes, Orange County were largely covered with citrus groves (more than a few vineyards, too.) Much of that was torn up years ago, to be replaced with ugly stucco excrescences known as condominiums. This was not necessarily an improvement, IMAO.
Concerning blueness: California may average out blue, but once you get away from the urban areas and college towns, you'll find it much more difficult to turn around without tripping over someone who probably thinks that George W. is too liberal to be trusted very far. (Remember
The Grapes of Wrath? More Okies here than in Oklahoma. And Orange County? It'd be hard to find anywhere more solidly Republican.)
