We're mammals, but the dinosaurs could have become inteligent and we'd have two species if they hadn't of died out. And then you have insects that can become inteligent, Plants, Marine mammals/fish. So there are plenty of paths that could have happend simutaniously on the Xindi homeworld, instead of just one branch spliting off multiple times.
