St:tng Xx
On this day twenty years ago, Encounter at Farpoint was first broadcast.
Where were you? I was in Australia at the time, and it wasn't being broadcast there. I came back in time for the third season, but didn't start watching until about halfway through the fourth. Edit: Why did the Topic Title decapitalise my capitals? Newman! |
Well, I was busy in kindergarden at the time, so I wouldn't know. Actually, I really didn't get into TNG until the sixth season or so. Before that...well, let me quote Phil Farrand (more or less), "Somehow I thought that 'boldly going' would be more exciting than this." Of course I've grown to respect the older Trek Renaissance episodes in later years.

Looking back at the last twenty years, I'm amazed over and over again how far Trek has gotten. Think about it, twenty years ago:
The only Trek novels (besides novelizations of episodes and movies), were things like Spock's World and Spock Must Die! The closest thing we had to Trek reference materials were the OLD Starfleet Technical Manual and the original Franz-Josef blueprints. CG modelling for special effects was still in its infancy. Remember when starfields were sequins on a piece of blue fabric? They actually thought Ferengi would make a decent continuing nemesis, without a need for Romulans? |

I was simplifying. Besides, I didn't know those were that old.
|
I can't remember. I was about 10, so there are probably no tales of excitement and daring, though.
|
Well, you still got me beat by a few years.
|
My Mum would have been pregnant with me at the time...
...and if it wasn't being broadcast in Australia at the time I wouldn't even have experienced it pre-natally (if that's a word). |
Twenty years ago I was one year old. I probably had already been introduced to Star Wars by that point, though.
