Threshold 1x01 & 1x02: "Trees Made of Glass"

Threshold is upon us -- and so far, I like what I see. It's no secret that I'm a big Brannon Braga fan*, and I've always been impressed with Brent Spiner too; it looks like this series will make good use of both. What I found surprising was that Spiner wasn't the main character. It would have been easy for the show to rely on his star power, but instead he's just one of six interesting characters.

The math wasn't perfect, and the biology was absurd (triple helix?), but I can put up with that for a good story. This story was good. I look forward to seeing where it goes -- and I hope the writers aren't bluffing about having it generally planned out for a few seasons. We've learned from Chris Carter what happens when you play this kind of show by ear.

What did you guys think?

* I say this with no reservations and no apologies. Let the flame party begin!

I wasn't going to watch it, but then I saw Brent Spiner, and I though, huh, maybe I will.

It was entertaining and interesting, to be sure. It's sci-fi drama, and seems there could be some good plots and character development ahead.

But...I kind though the forest of glass looked more like a ravaged cornfield or sparse meadow of glass :P

I think... that I don't have a clue what Threshold is. Can you point me to a synopsis, Zeke?

Wowbagger 09-24-2005 03:43 AM

I like Rick Berman.

Brannon Braga is the destroyer of Trek, however well-meaning he may be.

Threshold was entertaining. It has a solid cast (with Brent Spiner as Arik Soo--I mean... whatever his name is. Yes.), and a pretty decent story. Still, every time I recognize a part of the story that was fairly obvious a Braga bit, I cringe. The midget with the inferiority complex strikes me as very Braga, and it is bad.

Sadly, though I would like to, I'm probably not going to have time in my life for Threshold. Between modding Bridge Commander, writing, composing pleading e-mails to Zeke (asking for him to please let me send him money for FM "Zero Hour"), the usual Big Three Friday on Sci-Fi, and, of course, school, life is just too busy to watch the network attempt to relearn Sci-Fi after, what, 50 years without any SF on that channel? But we'll see.

See, does that sound plausible to you guys? It's GOT to be some kind of trick.

IT'S A TRAP!

GRRRR. I just discovered that for whatever reason, everything I've taped in the last week or so has recorded from channel 3, not the one I specified. One of the things I missed was this week's Threshold -- can anybody fill me in?

ijdgaf 09-25-2005 09:48 AM

Well, there was this shuttle. And something about lizards. I forget the rest.

Zeke 09-26-2005 02:26 AM

And with that, my problem is solved.

Space Tree 09-26-2005 03:51 AM

I don't have a lot to say about "Threshold" other than it's one of my favorite new shows & that it's got a ton of potential.

Yup.

Zeke 11-25-2005 11:54 PM

Lovely. Couldn't decide whether to try out Threshold? Now it's a moot point. Yet another promising new show that's not getting a chance.

PointyHairedJedi 11-26-2005 06:46 AM

Anything that prempts season two of Battlestar Galactica has it coming, if you ask me. Not that I'm biased or anything. ;)

Zeke 11-26-2005 10:38 AM

Battlestar Freaking Ga-Freaking-Lactica can kiss my freaking --

(ahem) Sorry, just clearing my throat. Rant? What rant?

Opium 11-26-2005 01:50 PM

Hmm, let's see, put a new show next to Law & Order SVU, which is one of the best shows on network TV, and Boston Legal, which is another one of the best shows on network TV.

I only got to see a few eps, but it seemed like Threshold had the potential to be one of the best TV shows on network TV eventually, but sticking a feldgling show next to two huge ones is just plain rude. (I won't say dumb, because the network execs might have been trying to cancel a good yet sci-fi-y show in favour of something cheaper, or they may have thought it was already strong enough to stand on its own feet)

Anyways, back to sleep for me (Anyone have a sure-fire way to keep a that isn't violent, nor involves disowning said cat, that keeps a cat quiet? Or who is willing to donate to the Build Opium A Soundproof Room fund?)

KillerGodMan 11-28-2005 02:59 AM

Aww! I liked Threshold!

KillerGodMan 12-01-2005 03:15 AM

Deleted because KillerGM is a big stupidhead, DESPITE the fact that he has a fairly high IQ level

Edited by NOT KillerGM, NOT KILLERGM! Get the thought out of your head, RIGHT NOW!

Zeke 12-01-2005 11:45 AM

Scroll up, KGM. The word "lovely" in my post was a link.

Sci Fi just aired part one of the series premiere tonight. I presume they'll be showing it all (including unaired episodes?) Seems to be phase two of their three part plan to pick up all of those major network, "let's see if we can capture the Lost crowd" alien invasion series, all cancelled after one season. I remember seeing ads for Surface sometime last year (an NBC show they already had the rights to). Now they've got CBS's Threshold. I wonder how long before they con ABC out of Invasion?

Anyway, I honestly wasn't that impressed. It seemed fairly cheesy. The characters were all rather cliche, and I can't say the whole "crack team of archetypal misfit nerds" hasn't been done to death in every disaster movie I've seen (major Armageddon vibes). Spiner was solid, but the rest of the acting was rather... B-movieish.

Does the series pick up after the first episode? Or is it a good example (whether you enjoyed it or not) of how the rest of the series goes?
