March 16

Blast! I had a terrific idea for Pi Day this year (as people who read my LJ know), but I was too busy on the day itself to prepare it. It's too good an idea to waste on a late update, so I'll have to save it for next year.

As a substitute, I'll re-link you to what I did last year, The Top 10 Pi Day Activities of Enterprise Characters. (5MV pi/pi Years Ago?) In addition, here are two "seasonal" links: last week's cartoon at Bob the Angry Flower (a frequent source of good math jokes, but I digress) and A Steep Price For Pie, a subcomic of Team Special Olympics.

Sa'ar Chasm 03-17-2006 05:18 AM

On the plus side, this is topic #314 in the News category.

Zeke 03-17-2006 07:57 AM

Good LORD! This makes it all worthwhile!

...No, wait. It would have been topic 314 anyway.

But still! Damn!

Sa'ar Chasm 03-17-2006 03:08 PM

This is the type of coincidence you can't plan.

Are these Pi jokes? Or just pie jokes?

Either way, I'm afraid I don't really get either of them.

e of pi 03-17-2006 09:52 PM

Same here. The list was good, though.

Zeke 03-17-2006 10:30 PM

They're "just" pie jokes. A Steep Price For Pie is a whole series -- there are seven strips so far, so if you don't like the first one, try the others. There are other subcomics, too; An Inappropriate Time For Ham and What a Scoop! are hilarious. The idea in each case, as I see it, is that he picked a title and then wrote cartoons to fit it.

As for Bob the Angry Flower, that's an acquired taste. There's basically no continuity between strips, so you're not missing any context. I can recommend a passel of individual Bob strips I love, but a better idea is to poke around the archives. (Don't just read recent strips... for the last two years or so, Bob has been almost incessantly political. I put up with it because I'm already a fan, but the political stuff won't make you one.)

Happy St. Patrick's Day! I couldn't really do an update this time, but that's okay, because last year we did enough St. Patrick's Day for about three years. Instead, I'm going to listen to The Corrs' latest album, Home, which is almost entirely traditional Irish stuff. You should too.

I hope to resume nontrivial updates this weekend. (Tomorrow, after all, is a good chance to hit the hangover demographic.) Meanwhile, if you're desperate for something Irish, you could always read the Fair Haven scene (with surprise guest star) in "Light Unseen," one of my VS9 episodes. I'm rather proud of it.

richardson 03-19-2006 03:24 AM

Ah, dsokdpaches....

And, of course, one of the ultimate lines:

"Are you out of your vulcan mind!? What? The doctor told me to say it the instance you suggested anything involving mind-melds."

Zeke 03-24-2006 06:51 PM

Not dead. Update when I get home. May the way of the hero lead to the Triforce.

Lostoyannaya 03-24-2006 07:46 PM

You sound tired. Take you time!

e of pi 03-24-2006 10:08 PM

Glad that the polar bear repellant works.

EDIT: And thanks for fixing my avatar problem.

Chancellor Valium 03-25-2006 12:56 PM

Also not dead :)

Zeke 03-09-2007 05:08 AM

Oh crap.

I have no idea what my brilliant Pi Day idea last year was.

AKAArzosah 03-09-2007 09:27 AM

In your LJ you said you were working on it, so do you have something written down somewhere?

Zeke 03-09-2007 09:59 AM

Nope. I'm just gonna have to try and figure it out again.

AKAArzosah 03-09-2007 11:07 AM

You know, if you hadn't revived this thread, I doubt anyone would have noticed... quick, hide the evidence! I won't tell anyone... maybe... if the money's right.

mudshark 03-09-2007 04:31 PM

Mmmm... pi...

ijdgaf 03-10-2007 01:44 AM

Crap. I really hope you didn't tell me about it, because I vaguely remember that you might have but have no earthly idea what it might've been.

Zeke 03-14-2007 03:09 PM

Well, I haven't remembered my Pi Day idea from last year, but I do have a cool new one. Hope I have time to execute it today.

PointyHairedJedi 03-14-2007 08:07 PM

Killing it now is the only option, eh?

Nate the Great 03-14-2007 08:25 PM

Well, you could always ask the guys at All Too Flat to allow you to play their Pi Song in the background of the site all day. And you could replace the main page wallpaper with that great pi pie.

Zeke 03-15-2007 06:12 PM

Well, I was too busy yesterday (I got to explain the wonders of pi to an equally wondrous girl I've met), but this new idea is way too much fun, so I'll still be doing it.

That went well, then?

Zeke 03-16-2007 12:04 AM

Not exactly. It's complicated.

ijdgaf 03-16-2007 01:46 AM

Huh. The adjective pun I was expecting was "irrational".

Zeke 03-16-2007 02:14 AM

Heh, I made that joke during the Pi Day festivities. She nearly hit me. It was worth it.

Sa'ar Chasm 03-16-2007 05:51 AM

You and your puns do have that effect on people, yes.

PointyHairedJedi 03-16-2007 05:34 PM

My irony dectectors nearly went off the scale just then!

mudshark 03-17-2007 01:25 AM

Better check for irony filings in the bottoms of your meters, then.

Sa'ar Chasm 03-17-2007 03:51 AM

That wasn't irony. His puns really do have that effect on people.

*brandishes pool cue*

PointyHairedJedi 03-17-2007 06:21 PM

And of course you've never engendered such feelings in others, Sa'ar. ;)

You'll be hearing from my lawyer. I'm IN PAIN now, dammit.

mudshark 03-18-2007 03:05 AM

My work here is done; I'm needed elsewhere now. I'm needed wherever outlaws rule the West; wherever innocent women and children are afraid to walk the streets; wherever a man cannot live in simple dignity; wherever a people cry out for justice.

Nate the Great 03-19-2007 06:58 AM

Oh, great, now you got the Hercules opening narration stuck in my head. I hope you're happy.

mudshark 03-19-2007 04:14 PM

I did?

(That's pretty good, I guess, considering I've never even seen it.)

Nate the Great 03-20-2007 01:46 AM

What a shame. Even Jim Wright is a Xena and Hercules fan.

evay 03-14-2008 02:26 PM

bump?

Hey Zeke, anything ∏lanned?

Nate the Great 03-14-2008 02:54 PM

Yeah, at least put up the pi pie as the wallpaper on the main site!

PointyHairedJedi 03-14-2008 04:42 PM

Mmmm, pie.

It needed to be said.

Zeke 03-14-2008 09:46 PM

Hate to say it, but I now have no idea what I thought of last year or the year before. I do have something else I'm working on, but it may be a little late.
