I just read that Disney is planning to use some former Star Trek actors in Dubbing Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, a Miyazaki film. My main complaint is, why the dubbing? In my experience the dubbing of anime in English is always terrible. For evidence look at Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Cowboy Bebop Movie and the series Inuyasha. All the voices are monotone and sound exactly the same.
Also, the dubbing of live-action films always seems terrible too. I like to watch foriegn films and whenever they are dubbed to English it makes me cringe, it's so bad. Anyone agree/disagree? Or am I just picky for preferring subtitles?[/color:post_uid0] |
I always watch Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon with the subtitles. The DVD is preset to have the English dubbed, but I hate that cause their mouths are moving one way and i'm hearing a totaly other voice. Blech. My dad can't stand the subtitles but I'd much rather read it then be listening to something that doesn't seem synched.[/color:post_uid0]

Hmpf. Count yourself lucky, folks - *every* goddamn movie gets dubbed over for Germany. Granted, usually in a somewhat professional manner, but still.
On the other hand, we are forerunners in just having fun with really bad dubbing. :) Gatac[/color:post_uid0] |
Meh. I had to watch Atlantis dubbed over, and it's every bit as annoying as dubbing on live action films. Especially since I was looking forward to hearing Claudia Christian voice one of the characters. But nooooo, I had to watch the whole bloody thing [i:post_uid0]in Mandarin[/i:post_uid0]. UGH![/color:post_uid0]

I much prefer watching things in the original language, with subtitles, to dubbed versions. Notable exceptions to this rule include the Godzilla movies and [i:post_uid0]Speed Racer[/i:post_uid0].[/color:post_uid0]

That's why the Dutch invented subtitles. Ok, so maybe we didn't invent them. We sure use them a lot. It's also why I hate German television. I think subtitles are way better, because sometimes, they make these [i:post_uid0]terrible[/i:post_uid0] translation errors, and that way at least you can hear the original. :eyeroll:[/color:post_uid0] |
Give me subtitles. It's so much nicer to hear a film in it's original language.[/color:post_uid0]
|
I prefer stuff that's dubbed. If I wanted to read, I'd pick up a book.[/color:post_uid0]
|
I prefer subtitles, but only when it is properly done. I have watched to many things where the subtitles are so bad, I had to turn it off. I was watching something, I can't remember what, and at one point someone was calling out a name, and the name the subtitles had didn't match. The entire show was filled with problems like that.
It's the same for dubbing. If it's done well, and I don't notice it, then I don't care. As long as I can watch it, and enjoy it, I don't mind either way.[/color:post_uid0] |

Anime has that problem a lot. Some series get dubbed, but you can also watch it in Japanese, with English subtitles. The problem is, the characters have other names in English.[/color:post_uid0] |
Watching bad anime dubbing mostly adds to the amusement for me, though it does get irritating. Fortunately, German dubs are usually either funny or good.

That's why you watch fansubs, rather than stuff that's been mutilated by DiC or other evil corporate hosers. Someone sent me a fansubbed version of the final episode of the first season of Sailo---of a certain anime series. It bears very little resemblance to what YTV showed, and it's much, much better.[/color:post_uid0] |
The definite worse in Inuyasha on Adult Swim. I mean the one guy yells out Wind Tunnel when he attacks which just sends me into a fit of giggles.
Fansubs are the best, although you have to download them illegally.[/color:post_uid0] |
Dubbing is evil. Dubbing is a crime. Dubbing must stop!
It`s just plain massacre of the original script and acting (vocal) performances. It came straight from hell, if you ask me... If subtitling goes wrong, you can at least hear the original. If dubbing is deeply incorrect, how would you know?[/color:post_uid0] |
My point exactly. :)[/color:post_uid0]

Dub-Be-Gone: Kills Dubs in seconds!
|
Well, in general I prefer subs, but it really depends on the series and translators. For instance, SEL had a horrendous sub job. On the other hand, there are a number of prominent seria that make you rant and rave at those psycho dub bastards. And that's even without bringing the censors into play.
|
when I get my hands on dvds or some movie else including the original language, I go for that
the german dub version kills some of the best jokes...... |
Dubs and subs have their own upsides.
Subs are generally more accurate because the subbers try and get as close to the original dialogue as possible. Dubs are interesting in that they are often funny, and some things are cut for no reason. Yeah, like they're going to leave this episode in. (Too bad the screencaps section isn't there, but then again I have the clip...mind you, they left more of the violence in this series, so maybe the towel scene will be left in? Then I'd get to see Chaud laugh...he cries in 28+29...but...) Sorry, rambling. A bit of bitterness towards dubs from everyone, I think. When all's said and done, I prefer subs. |
In Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, it was cool to have the subs rather than the dub, but you spend the whole time trying to read than watch the movie.
|
The dubbing for CTHD was laaaaame.
|
I haven't seen a dubbed version

Wow, is this an old topic. The bolts through its' neck are a little strange though.

It's quite scary, really. I often wonder why I can't read books this fast. |
Subtitles are defintely a yes. Dubbing is bad for your teeth.
But... Miyazaki? Is he at it again? *shudder* Sorry. I have to be the only person in the Western Hemisphere who really hated "Spirited Away." What?! J-Team is closing?! |
Quote:
I never saw Spirited Away. I think Miyazaki's stuff is a little overrated, although I liked Kiki's Delivery Service. J-Team closed, man. Come to the funeral at my house. :( |

No, I'm a total anime nut and I thought it was way too corny. Same goes for Kiki's Delivery Service. I'm not exactly a Miyazaki fan either. (Also, I was getting my episodes for that anime messed up. It was 24 I wanted to see. Eheheh...Enzan in a towel...) Ahem. |
Actually, I recently saw Howls Moving Castle, and that wasn't too bad. I think I'd rather read the book though - it seemed a little confused in places.

Okay, you caught me - I have no idea  |

Do you mean that you have no idea where I'll be in the 5th row, or for what? |
GAH! DUBBING! RUN!
Subtitles are much better. |

Anyway hearing the original voices is always better. I am currently addicted to Bleach (a Japanese anime), and there is just no way an English dub could convey the cadences and emotions of the original voice actors. ("Nani??" = "What??" just sounds different.) This way you also get to hear the chucks of imported English ("Thankyou!" pops up a lot, and the closing credit song is all in Japanese except for the words "rhapsody" and "appreciation"). |
I know what you mean. Absolutely nothing can compare to the look on my face (at least, that's what I heard) when I found out my favorite character in my favorite anime was going to be voiced by the same voice as Sonic the Hedgehog in the new season.
Harpuia says I had this really weird expression on my face, as if I were going to kill something but not be aware of doing it. Then I remembered he's voiced by a girl in the original...but it's barely noticeable, and the previous VA was perfect...gah. Don't get me started. |
As far as Inuyasha's dubbing goes, as far as the translation it's pretty good as far as I can tell from also watching a good fansub. Most of the things that changed are acceptable given the challenges involved. But yes, Miroku's voice actor in particular isn't very good at the acting part. Look on the bright side, though; at least it got imported despite him and without censorship.
Censorship and dumbing down are the real enemies from what I've seen. Not only do censors butcher the themes of a story, the replacement stuff is usually poorly thought-out; I can think of several video games right off the top of my head whose censorship was handled very poorly (no, the women weren't "kidnapped" if they're still right there; no, a mere find-and-replace of "super beings" for "gods" and "wish" for "pray" in a game set in a fantasy world doesn't "protect" children from "pagan religions" and insults the intelligence of everyone 13 and up to boot). As for dumbing down, that's even worse. I'm sorry, but just because something is going to be shown to children doesn't mean that you have to render everything into black and white so they can understand it. Compensating badly for cultural differences so minor that they shouldn't be touched falls into this category too (no, the girl who looks just like Horohoro is not his wife, she's his sister, and you didn't have to change that because "it wouldn't be seen that way"!). OK, end rant. I need to take a shower. -- Pteryx |
But who will "protect" us from all these "quotation marks"?
|
"I" am not "sure". Why not "ask" "Kira"?
