Two new Next Gen fivers today. New writer Nic Corelli brings us Five-Minute "Symbiosis" all the way from Croatia, and saxamaphone turns out another fiver with Five-Minute "Masks."[/color:post_uid0]

Derek 03-31-2003 02:20 PM

[quote:post_uid0]Picard: I can't imagine what it must be like to depend on a chemical substance. Computer -- tea, Earl Grey, hot.

Captain's Log: Ha! Take that, CSI, NYPD Blue and Law & Order! You and your addicts-of-the-week! We have an entire civilization addicted to drugs! Beat that!

Picard: Sorry, but the Prime Directive forbids us from interfering with the natural course of your ineptitude.[/quote:post_uid0]
Excellent, Nic. Good debut.

[quote:post_uid0]Data: It is a 26-sided polyhedron, composed of hexagons, octagons and --

Riker: Look what we found inside the comet, sir -- a giant alien archive in the shape of a giant horse.

Worf: "How Sharper Than A Serpent's Tooth!"
Picard: Worf, we're not playing the "List the Episodes or Movies that the Current Events Duplicate" game.[/quote:post_uid0]
Great fiver, sax. And thanks for the reference. :)[/color:post_uid0]

NAHTMMM 03-31-2003 03:23 PM

[quote:post_uid0]Captain's Log: We're studying a star whose massive flares are making our computer go all flashy-blue and nuts. What a beautiful opportunity for Reckless Endangerment of the Ship [TM]. Janeway would be so proud.[/quote:post_uid0]

When I read that, I was sure this was going to be a classic.

[quote:post_uid0]Data: Captain, a distress call is coming from the ship orbiting the fourth planet. It's being sent to the third planet.
Picard: Well, I'm pretty sure we're not the third planet. Turn it off.
Data: Captain, need I remind you that distress calls are an important source of plots? Even good ones, on occasion?
Picard: Oh, in that case, don't turn it off. We certainly need a good plot after that Klingon death-howling episode.[/quote:post_uid0]

[quote:post_uid0]Captain's Log: Ha! Take that, CSI, NYPD Blue and Law & Order! You and your addicts-of-the-week! We have an entire civilization addicted to drugs! Beat that![/quote:post_uid0]

And I was proven right!

"Masks" was really funny too.

[quote:post_uid0]Riker: Look what we found inside the comet, sir -- a giant alien archive in the shape of a giant horse.[/quote:post_uid0]

:D[/color:post_uid0]

FatMatDuhRat 03-31-2003 04:32 PM

[b:post_uid0]La Forge:[/b:post_uid0] Snakes! Why did it have to be snakes?
 :D
[b:post_uid0]BRILLIANT![/b:post_uid0][/color:post_uid0]

Nan 03-31-2003 05:15 PM

[quote:post_uid0][b:post_uid0]Picard[/b:post_uid0]: Who are you?
[b:post_uid0]Data/Ihat[/b:post_uid0]: I am Ihat, and I need to hide from the wrath of Masaka.
[b:post_uid0]Picard[/b:post_uid0]: And who is she? Khan's sister?
[b:post_uid0]Data/Ihat[/b:post_uid0]: Nah -- we're talking [i:post_uid0]heavy-duty[/i:post_uid0] wrath here.[/quote:post_uid0]

*snarf*

Hoo boy, rather liked 'em. :) Good work, guys!

Nan[/color:post_uid0]

Wonko The Sane 03-31-2003 07:07 PM

Great debut Nic! I'm looking forward to more fivers from you!

And as always, great job Sax!

This is gonna keep me laughin' for a while...and has inspired me to start writing my first fiver...5MV "Message in a Bottle".

I'll have it done "soon"
:D[/color:post_uid0]

Kristina 03-31-2003 07:47 PM

In order not to sound redundant: I second Wonko's opinion, to simply quote the most recent. Nice going, both! :D --and as for my reaction to both fivers: [/color:post_uid0]

NeoMatrix 03-31-2003 07:47 PM

Awesome Fivers. I have been looking forward to seeing a fiver for "Masks" for awhile now. It is one weird episode.[/color:post_uid0]

Kristina 03-31-2003 07:53 PM

...but it's an episode that does show some of the versatility of Brent Spiner. And weird or not, that makes it interesting to me.[/color:post_uid0]

PointyHairedJedi 03-31-2003 09:24 PM

Plus Placard..[i:post_uid0]Picard[/i:post_uid0], sorry, gets to do some of that archelogical stuff that he likes so much.

Good stuff, guys.[/color:post_uid0]

Kira 03-31-2003 10:21 PM

Uhh, you might want to check before starting that. Unless I'm mistaken, "Message in a Bottle" is one of the episodes with Zeke's name carved on it in stone.[/color:post_uid0]

Wonko The Sane 03-31-2003 10:29 PM

[quote:post_uid0="Kira"]Uhh, you might want to check before starting that. Unless I'm mistaken, "Message in a Bottle" is one of the episodes with Zeke's name carved on it in stone.[/quote:post_uid0]
Hmm...in which case maybe I'll stop.

I've always been wondering why that episode has never been fived, since it's a huge fan favorite.

Oh well. :eyeroll:

EDIT: On second thought, it could always be made into a fiver by committee. Just a thought.[/color:post_uid0]

Kira 03-31-2003 10:43 PM

I'm pretty sure it's one of Zeke's personal favorites, so I seriously doubt that will happen.[/color:post_uid0]

Wonko The Sane 03-31-2003 10:56 PM

:::Sigh:::

Guess I should stop watching my tape of that episode now (on about the 3rd time through...taking notes).

I havn't met a trek fan that DOESN'T like "Message in a Bottle", which is why I was so shocked to find out that it wasn't already fived. I've actually been playing around with the idea of fiving it for months now, good thing I never started it.

Thanks for the warning, Kira![/color:post_uid0]

Saxamaphone 04-01-2003 12:50 AM

Nic - that was hilarious , excellent job and a magnifacant debut :D

Wonko - "Message in a Bottle" is one of my fav. episodes man :) I mean, how can you beat that multi-vector attack mode? Plus Andy Dick as an EMH? I don't know how

And thanks for the kind words everyone :)[/color:post_uid0]

Wonko The Sane 04-01-2003 01:16 AM

[quote:post_uid0="Saxamaphone"]I mean, how can you beat that multi-vector attack mode?[/quote:post_uid0]
Oh, I had some good plans for that one!

I'm sure Zeke's got some better jokes up his sleeve though, so I'll wait for his version.

:D[/color:post_uid0]

I was just saying that everybody I've talked to seems to love that episode.[/color:post_uid0]

Captain Galactic 04-01-2003 01:54 AM

I highly suspect there will be another update tomorrow. Why, no reason...

On another note entirly, just out of curiousity, is "The Arsenal of Freedom" taken?[/color:post_uid0]

Sa'ar Chasm 04-01-2003 02:03 AM

[quote:post_uid0]I was just saying that everybody I've talked to seems to love that episode.[/quote:post_uid0]

No, I mean that I have no idea what the episode is about, or what series it's from.[/color:post_uid0]

Wonko The Sane 04-01-2003 02:19 AM

"Message in a bottle" - In a nutshell

Voyager, season 4, episode 14:

Seven uses an alien subspace communication network to make contact with an experimental starfleet vessel. Since conventional subspace transmissions will not reach the vessel, the doctor is sent through the comm network to the ship (USS Prometheus). On arrival, the doctor finds out the ship has been taken over by Romulans, and the entire crew is dead. The doctor activates the experimental EMH mark 2 to help him. Romulans use cool 3-piece seperation (Multi-Vector-Assault-Mode) to destroy a pursuing federation vessel. In the meantime, Seven makes first contact with the Hirogen. Doc and EMH2 take control of the Prometheus from the Romulans. Romulan warbirds attempt to get the ship back. 3 additional starfleet vessels attempt to destroy the Prometheus. All ends well.

This was the first time Voyager made contact with the Alpha Quadrant, and arguably the best episode of the series.[/color:post_uid0]

[quote:post_uid0="Captain Galactic"]On another note entirly, just out of curiousity, is "The Arsenal of Freedom" taken?[/color:post_uid0][/quote:post_uid0]
I happen to know from personal experience that it is (I tried to request it and found it was already called).

Also, except by mere happenstance, there's no way I or anyone else know what's been called. Read the FAQs. Any Original Series fivers are requested through IJD. Any Next Generation fivers go through Marc. Anything else goes through Zeke. They're the people you want to talk to if you want to write fivers. Asking on the boards is futile.[/color:post_uid0]

Wonko The Sane 04-01-2003 03:06 AM

:::Smacks himself for not reading FAQs:::

Well, that solves all my problems right there!
:suspicious:[/color:post_uid0]

NAHTMMM 04-01-2003 03:40 AM

Of course, Wonko, all this shouldn't necessarily discourage you from writing fivers for your own amusement. :) Like the song says, um...er...summat about pleasing yourself and a truck... :S...never mind. I don't expect to see all the freelancers I write published in my lifetime (some of them not at all), but I still laugh at the in-jokes. And it beats a lot of other stuff that's out there, like doing drugs or picking a fight with your linebacker brother or going to Brat Pack concerts. :dead:[/color:post_uid0]

Sa'ar Chasm 04-01-2003 04:11 AM

[quote:post_uid0]Anything else goes through Zeke. [/quote:post_uid0]

DS9 stuff seems to be Kira's domain.[/color:post_uid0]

Zeke 04-01-2003 05:27 AM

Technically, DS9 is my domain, but [i:post_uid0]everything[/i:post_uid0] is Kira's domain to some extent.[/color:post_uid0]

NeoMatrix 04-01-2003 05:42 AM

Hey, Kira or Zeke, do you still have me down to do Darkling? I am still working on it. Are there any Star Trek NG episodes that are still available?[/color:post_uid0]

Kira 04-01-2003 05:45 AM

Yep, I've still got you for that one. And like Derek said (he's been well trained, as you can see) ask Marc if you have a particular episode in mind. (Getting him to list all available eps wouldn't be a very nice thing to do. <g>)[/color:post_uid0]

PointyHairedJedi 04-01-2003 03:48 PM

Well, it's now April the 1st and I've noticed that there is something distinctly odd about the front page....

Must just be a coincidence.[/color:post_uid0]

Derek 04-01-2003 04:04 PM

Front page? Something is decidedly odd about the whole site.[/color:post_uid0]

PointyHairedJedi 04-01-2003 04:29 PM

It must be Zuke's doing - I just can't see Zeke willingly adding all those multiple question and exclamation marks.[/color:post_uid0]

Zeke 04-01-2003 05:20 PM

Oh, I'm going to kill her.[/color:post_uid0]

Marc 04-01-2003 05:27 PM

>> On another note entirly, just out of curiousity, is "The Arsenal of Freedom" taken?

I happen to know from personal experience that it is (I tried to request it and found it was already called). <<

Yes, I can confirm that it's already reserved.

>> Are there any Star Trek NG episodes that are still available?

ask Marc if you have a particular episode in mind. <<

Yup, that's the best thing to do. The list of free episodes is in a constant state of flux, so asking me directly about the current availability of a particular show would be best. If you want to be efficient, you could even ask me about several potential shows at once (up to five at a time), so that I can check them all at the same time; if any are free, I'll then ask you to pick one as the show you'd like to work on. At the moment, there are about 60 or so unclaimed Next Gen episodes. Note that all the two-parters are reserved for Zeke, so you don't need to inquire about those.[/color:post_uid0]

NAHTMMM 04-01-2003 05:55 PM

[quote:post_uid0="Zeke"]Oh, I'm going to kill her.[/quote:post_uid0]
*hysterical giggling*

Incidentally, just where are these alleged multiple marks situated? I haven't seen any (maybe I just didn't realize it, I dunno)... :S[/color:post_uid0]

Derek 04-01-2003 06:02 PM

Um, just about everywhere I've looked has it. Maybe you should reload the page to make sure you have the most current copy. Then check out the TOS or DS9 index pages. "Who Mourns for Morn???" "Who Mourns for Adonais???" "Is There in Truth No Beauty???"[/color:post_uid0]

FatMatDuhRat 04-01-2003 06:51 PM

It appears that the Homepage for [b:post_uid0]5MV[/b:post_uid0] has become all
[b:post_uid0][i:post_uid0]Ska-Rewy[/i:post_uid0][/b:post_uid0] in honor of [b:post_uid0]All Fools Day[/b:post_uid0]... unless this
is just a new attempt to severely mess w/all us loyal fans.

No, this is the Five-Minute Voyager page from the Mirror Universe.

How do I know? I'm the mirror Sa'ar Chasm. You can call me Earnest.

The real Sa'ar? Or don't worry about him. He's entertaining the Intendant.

[b:post_uid0]Intendant:[/b:post_uid0] He wishes![/color:post_uid0]

Kira 04-01-2003 08:24 PM

[quote:post_uid0="Derek"]Then check out the TOS or DS9 index pages.[/color:post_uid0][/quote:post_uid0]
My personal favorite is "Q Who???". :D

(Incidentally, not that I'm claiming responsibility for this atrocious incident, it's all the fivers and all the season pages in every series, not just TOS and DS9. <g>)[/color:post_uid0]

NAHTMMM 04-01-2003 08:59 PM

I was looking through one of the actual fivers in this update and saw nothing, hence my confusion.

By the way, looks like whoever-it-was goofed up on "Yesteryear". One of those blank boxes that those of us who wade through the special characters option in Word know so well. ;)[/color:post_uid0]

bwuahahaha Oh thanks guys, I needed that laugh this week.[/color:post_uid0]
