I just read that Disney is planning to use some former Star Trek actors in Dubbing Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, a Miyazaki film. My main complaint is, why the dubbing? In my experience the dubbing of anime in English is always terrible. For evidence look at Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Cowboy Bebop Movie and the series Inuyasha. All the voices are monotone and sound exactly the same.
Also, the dubbing of live-action films always seems terrible too. I like to watch foriegn films and whenever they are dubbed to English it makes me cringe, it's so bad. Anyone agree/disagree? Or am I just picky for preferring subtitles?[/color:post_uid0] |
I always watch Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon with the subtitles. The DVD is preset to have the English dubbed, but I hate that cause their mouths are moving one way and i'm hearing a totaly other voice. Blech. My dad can't stand the subtitles but I'd much rather read it then be listening to something that doesn't seem synched.[/color:post_uid0]

Hmpf. Count yourself lucky, folks - *every* goddamn movie gets dubbed over for Germany. Granted, usually in a somewhat professional manner, but still.
On the other hand, we are forerunners in just having fun with really bad dubbing. :) Gatac[/color:post_uid0] |
Meh. I had to watch Atlantis dubbed over, and it's every bit as annoying as dubbing on live action films. Especially since I was looking forward to hearing Claudia Christian voice one of the characters. But nooooo, I had to watch the whole bloody thing [i:post_uid0]in Mandarin[/i:post_uid0]. UGH![/color:post_uid0]

I much prefer watching things in the original language, with subtitles, to dubbed versions. Notable exceptions to this rule include the Godzilla movies and [i:post_uid0]Speed Racer[/i:post_uid0].[/color:post_uid0]

That's why the Dutch invented subtitles. Ok, so maybe we didn't invent them. We sure use them a lot. It's also why I hate German television. I think subtitles are way better, because sometimes, they make these [i:post_uid0]terrible[/i:post_uid0] translation errors, and that way at least you can hear the original. :eyeroll:[/color:post_uid0] |
Give me subtitles. It's so much nicer to hear a film in it's original language.[/color:post_uid0]

I prefer stuff that's dubbed. If I wanted to read, I'd pick up a book.[/color:post_uid0]

I prefer subtitles, but only when it is properly done. I have watched to many things where the subtitles are so bad, I had to turn it off. I was watching something, I can't remember what, and at one point someone was calling out a name, and the name the subtitles had didn't match. The entire show was filled with problems like that.
It's the same for dubbing. If it's done well, and I don't notice it, then I don't care. As long as I can watch it, and enjoy it, I don't mind either way.[/color:post_uid0] |

Anime has that problem a lot. Some series get dubbed, but you can also watch it in Japanese, with English subtitles. The problem is, the characters have other names in English.[/color:post_uid0] |
Watching bad anime dubbing mostly adds to the amusement for me, though it does get irritating. Fortunately, German dubs are usually either funny or good.

That's why you watch fansubs, rather than stuff that's been mutilated by DiC or other evil corporate hosers. Someone sent me a fansubbed version of the final episode of the first season of Sailo---of a certain anime series. It bears very little resemblance to what YTV showed, and it's much, much better.[/color:post_uid0] |
The definite worse in Inuyasha on Adult Swim. I mean the one guy yells out Wind Tunnel when he attacks which just sends me into a fit of giggles.
Fansubs are the best, although you have to download them illegally.[/color:post_uid0] |
Dubbing is evil. Dubbing is a crime. Dubbing must stop!
It`s just plain massacre of the original script and acting (vocal) performances. It came straight from hell, if you ask me... If subtitling goes wrong, you can at least hear the original. If dubbing is deeply incorrect, how would you know?[/color:post_uid0] |
My point exactly. :)[/color:post_uid0]

Well, in general I prefer subs, but it really depends on the series and translators. For instance, SEL had a horrendous sub job. On the other hand, there are a number of prominent seria that make you rant and rave at those psycho dub bastards. And that's even without bringing the censors into play.

when I get my hands on dvds or some movie else including the original language, I go for that
the german dub version kills some of the best jokes...... |
