How Robert Picardo tricked his way into his cameo in First Contact.
Because as we all know, he's a doctor, not a doorstop. |
A fun fan video where the TNG crew watches Star Wars.
See if you can pick out which episode each clip came from! |

Flower seeds, irrational numbers, and why the golden ratio is much more irrational than pi.
Numberphile strikes again. If someone asks you what these higher mathematical concepts have to do with the real world, this is as good a video as any. If you need another, Mathologer tackles e. |
Towel Day 2018, Part Two: H2G2 fanart from DeviantArt
This is not how I envision Wowbagger the Infinitely Prolonged The whale and bowl of petunias midfall Megaman sprites modified into H2G2 characters. Definite Bob and George vibes here... Apparently the Borg have even assimilated all of the sentient mattresses that are named Zem. I wouldn't expect these guys to be worthy of assimilation... Arthur and Ford as MLP characters chasing a sofa across prehistoric Earth. The choice of H2G2 green alien mascot and slice of bread as cutie marks confuses me. You'd expect Arthur to be a cup of tea, at least... Ford introduces the Fourth Doctor to the Guide. The weird thing is that it's the TV series version of Ford with the movie version of the Guide, not the TV series version of the Guide. LEGO minfigs of the cast: TV and movie versions. I wonder why the TV cast is with a modified version of the movie Guide... |
Periodic Videos shows us a periodic table from roundabout 1880.
Being a reader of Asimov science essays I've learned a bit about the history of the discovery of the elements and the development of the periodic table, so this stuff interests me. |
Today Overclocked Remix posted another Ducktales Moon Theme remix on their YouTube channel. I won't link to it, because I think it's rather subpar compared to their usual level of quality. However, I notice that I last mentioned ocremix in 2011, but never actually did a rundown of my favorite remixes, so let's get started....
Of course the classic Rabbit Joint Zelda song was one of the first, but I'm surprised it was #22 and not a bit lower. I feel it a shame that the Tetris "C" theme doesn't get as much exposure as the other two, but here's one example. Part of the charm of remixing video game music is taking melodies that are supposed to inspire one emotion and tweak it until it inspires another emotion. Why else would one twist Zelda's Lullaby into something more fitting for a techno club? The opening of King's Quest V pushed in a more relaxed, atmospheric direction. Commander Keen gets funky, but he still doesn't want to eat his veggies. In general I'm not a fan of fan vocals on these things because darnit Jim, we're nerds, not singers. And Mike/Darangen is no exception. But sometimes a remixer puts enough heart into his work that vocal deficiencies can be forgiven (especially when the music kicks butt). And this is one of these times. |
An explanation of the game mechanics that are being exploited in a Mario 1 speedrun.
It truly inspires awe, contemplating how many thousands of hours of collective effort are being used to save a fraction of a second of time finishing a thirty year old game. |
The Fourth Star Trek Deviantart Day!
Custom-made Mirror Marlena action figure This is labeled as a Star Trek sketch, but I'm not seeing it. Is it supposed to be a Studio Ghibli version of Janeway's Gothic holoprogram? Cute manga version of Doctor Crusher Manga version of Torres. It's nice how each of the sketches has B'Elanna expressing a different emotion. Manga versions of Seven and Doc. That line on Doc's face confuses me... Manga Barclay and Zimmerman. At least I think that's supposed to be Barclay and Zimmerman... Sisko and his baseball. You'd think with a tailor on board his uniform would fit better than that... Cartoon poster for "Our Man Bashir". I'm not sure what animation style or show I could best compare this to... Troi as a cake. With mint frosting... Picard playing his flute Young Spock and I-Chaya A lineup of Kirk's women. And now I have to try identifying all of them from memory. Left to right... 1. Unknown, she reminds me of Zarabeth but she's a "Lady of Spock" 2. The Orion Slave Girl played by Yvonne Craig in Whom Gods Destroy 3. No clue 4. Is that the girl from The Cloud Minders? 5. Shanna from The Gamesters of Triskelion 6. No clue (but her Cochrane delta is on the wrong side) 7. Uhura (which episode is that?) 8. The "witch" from Catspaw 9. That's Finney's daughter Jamie from Court Martial (not one of Kirk's women, FYI, ick) 10. Mirror Marlena Moreau 11. Korby's assistant, I forget her name 12. Elaan of Troyius 13. Areel Shaw 14. That woman from A Private Little War 15. She's a Scalosian from Wink of and Eye 16. Miramanee 17. Mira Romaine |

So apparently the fans have decided that June 16th is Captain Picard Day, and by sheer coincidence I stumbled upon this on June 16th...
The original Captain Picard Day clip, from "The Pegasus" ("The Pegasus" is set on Stardate 47457.1, and if you treat 47000 as January 1st, 2370 and 48000 as January 1st, 2371, (457.1/1000)(365 days)=166.8 days into the year, which is June 16th) ThinkGeek is holding a contest to win a Captain Picard Facepalm Bust The Picard Song! Beating Pokemon Red/Blue with only one Ditto.
No cheating except hacking the starter Pokeball to have a Ditto instead of Charmander/Squirtle/Bulbasaur. And having a few HM slaves to clear overworld obstacles, of course. |
Apparently today is the 10th anniversary of the Periodic Videos YouTube channel. I won't link to the commemorative videos, but I will link to a few of my favorite videos:
The team "sings" the Elements Song The Periodic Table (sort of) engraved on a human hair (50 microns by 90 microns!) Destroying pumpkins using chemistry in as many ways as possible Making a birthday cake using lab equipment and as many lab chemicals as possible Cutting butter with a hot knife, a laser beam, a waterjet, and sodium hydroxide (don't eat it, it's been turned into soap!). |
KittenWar!
Look at two pictures of kittens. Click the one you think is cuter. The site tells you what percentage of other voters agreed with you. Repeat. |
The Straight Dope (as an official set of columns at least) is no more.
Ouch. Seriously, ouch. Links to first and last columns. Over forty-five years. |
Harlan Ellison died yesterday.
It deserves comment by the forum, but I don't trust myself to make them right now. |
